Fun facts about the Bat

Bats navigate in complete darkness using echolocation, emitting ultrasonic pulses and interpreting the returning echoes to build a three-dimensional map of their surroundings. They account for roughly 20% of all mammal species on Earth. A single little brown bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquito-sized insects per hour. Bats play a vital ecological role as pollinators — the agave plant, source of tequila, depends entirely on bats for pollination.

Carving the Bat

The Bat is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
