Fun facts about the Butterfly

Inside a chrysalis, a caterpillar does not simply grow wings — it dissolves almost entirely into a soup of cells before reorganising into a butterfly. Monarch butterflies migrate up to 4,500 km from Canada to Mexico every year using the sun as a compass. Butterflies taste with their feet, thanks to chemoreceptors on their tarsi. Their wings are actually transparent — the colours come from thousands of tiny reflective scales.

Carving the Butterfly

The Butterfly is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
