Fun facts about the Giraffe

A giraffe's tongue is 45–50 cm long and dark blue-black, thought to protect it from sunburn during long hours of feeding. Despite their towering necks, giraffes have exactly the same number of cervical vertebrae as humans — just seven. Newborn giraffes drop nearly two metres to the ground at birth and are walking within hours. Giraffes only sleep around 30 minutes a day, usually in short naps of a few minutes.

Carving the Giraffe

The Giraffe is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
