Fun facts about the Owl

An owl's eyes are fixed in their sockets — they cannot move — which is why owls rotate their heads up to 270 degrees. Owls have three eyelids: one for blinking, one for sleeping, and a third called a nictitating membrane for cleaning. Their flight feathers have comb-like serrations that break up turbulence, making them nearly silent hunters. Some owls can hear prey moving under 60 cm of compacted snow.

Carving the Owl

The Owl is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
